Your immune system protects you from infections, diseases and substances that can harm your body. Unlike chemotherapy, immunotherapy is an approach to treatment that does not attack the tumour directly, but helps the immune system recognize and get rid of cancer cells. 

Dendritic cell immunotherapy

Immunotherapy is a therapeutic treatment that acts on a patient’s immune system by helping them fight their disease. In the case of cancer, the goal of immunotherapy is to « wake up » the immune system by stimulating the cells involved in recognition. These cells will then better detect and destroy cancer cells. 

THE TREATMENT

Treatment involves increasing the number of dendritic cells to activate the body’s immune system and fight cancer. Dendritic cells are taken directly from the patient, treated and cultured for several days in the laboratory and then injected back into the patient’s body.

Although immunotherapy is mainly used in the treatment of cancers, it is also very effective in the treatment of other diseases. The latest advances prove that immunotherapy can treat many types of tumour cells. Promising results have already been obtained in kidney tumours and melanomas. Immunotherapy is also proving to be very useful in the treatment of certain autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, etc. New therapeutic avenues also seem to be opening up with the use of immunotherapy in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.

THE BENEFITS OF IMMUNOTHERAPY

Unlike chemotherapy or other strong treatments, immunotherapy is painless and has no negative side effects. This treatment will radically reduce tumour markers, based on the body’s natural defence. This cellular therapy is currently the most advanced anti-cancer method and has many positive points: 

  • Immunotherapy can be effective while other treatments are not. Some cancers (such as skin cancer) do not respond well to radiation or chemotherapy, but begin to disappear after immunotherapy.
  • It can help other cancer treatments work better. Some therapies, such as chemotherapy, may be more effective if immunotherapy is done at the same time.
  • The cancer may be less likely to come back. When a patient receives immunotherapy, the immune system learns to attack cancer cells that are likely to come back. This is called immunomemory, and it’s what helps patients stay cancer-free longer.
